Responsible Gambling

Stay in control · 18+ only

I’m David Thompson, the independent casino reviewer and author behind this website.

Gambling can be enjoyable entertainment for adults, but it always involves financial risk. There is no strategy, casino, bonus, or game that can guarantee a profit, and gambling should never be treated as a reliable way to make money.

My casino reviews are designed to help you understand how casinos work, including their bonuses, payments, withdrawals, terms, and responsible gambling tools. They are not intended to encourage you to gamble more frequently, spend more money, or recover money you have already lost.

If you choose to gamble, the most important principle is simple:

Only gamble with money you can afford to lose.

This page explains practical ways to stay in control, the tools online casinos may provide, warning signs that gambling may be becoming harmful, and where you can find independent support.

No profit is ever guaranteed Set limits before you play Independent support exists

The starting point

Gambling Should Be Entertainment

Gambling outcomes are uncertain.

You can win, but you can also lose some or all of the money you gamble. Previous results do not guarantee future results, and a period of losses does not mean that a win is “due.”

Before gambling, consider the money you spend as part of your entertainment budget rather than money you expect to recover.

Never use money needed for essentials such as:

Rent or mortgage payments
Food
Utilities
Loan or credit repayments
Medical expenses
Education
Family responsibilities
Emergency savings

If losing the amount you are about to deposit would create financial difficulty, that money should not be used for gambling.

Decide first, play second

Set a Gambling Budget Before You Start

Decide how much you can afford to spend before opening a casino or making a deposit.

Your gambling budget should be separate from money required for everyday living and financial obligations.

Once you reach that limit, stop.

Increasing your budget because you have lost money defeats the purpose of having a limit in the first place.

A useful rule is:

Decide the maximum loss you are comfortable accepting before you play—not after you start losing.

The most expensive habit

Never Chase Losses

Chasing losses means continuing to gamble, or increasing the amount you gamble, in an attempt to recover money you have already lost.

This can quickly turn a manageable loss into a much larger one.

After losing money, it can be tempting to think:

“One more deposit.”

“One bigger bet.”

“I just need to get back to even.”

But the next gambling outcome is not guaranteed to compensate for the previous one.

Money already lost should not determine how much you gamble next.

If you notice yourself increasing deposits, stakes, or playing time specifically because you are trying to recover losses, stop playing and step away.

Borrowed money, doubled risk

Don’t Borrow Money to Gamble

Gambling with borrowed money substantially increases financial risk.

Avoid using:

Loans
Money borrowed from friends or family
Credit intended for essential expenses
Rent or bill money
Emergency funds
Money reserved for debt repayments

A gambling loss should never create a new debt obligation.

Time is a limit too

Set Time Limits as Well as Money Limits

Responsible gambling isn’t only about how much money you spend.

It is also about how much time gambling occupies.

Long sessions can make it harder to keep track of spending and make considered decisions.

Before playing, decide how long you intend to spend gambling.

Take regular breaks and avoid allowing gambling sessions to interfere with:

Sleep
Work
Education
Relationships
Family responsibilities
Social activities
Other hobbies

If gambling increasingly becomes the activity around which the rest of your life is organized, consider taking a longer break.

Clear head required

Avoid Gambling When Your Judgment May Be Affected

Gambling decisions should be made with a clear understanding of the financial risk involved.

Avoid gambling when you are:

Intoxicated
Extremely tired
Angry
Highly stressed
Trying to escape a difficult situation
Acting impulsively
Attempting to recover a previous loss

Strong emotions can make it harder to stick to limits or assess risk objectively.

Account controls

Responsible Gambling Tools

Many online casinos provide account tools designed to help players control how much money or time they spend gambling.

The exact tools available depend on the casino, licence, and jurisdiction.

I look for these controls when researching casinos.

⚖

Deposit Limits

A deposit limit restricts how much money you can deposit during a defined period.

Depending on the casino, limits may be available on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

Setting a deposit limit before gambling can create a financial boundary that is harder to exceed impulsively.

▼

Loss Limits

Some casinos allow players to restrict the amount they can lose over a particular period.

This can provide an additional safeguard beyond deposit limits.

The way losses are calculated can differ between operators, so check the casino’s explanation of how its limit works.

◆

Wagering or Betting Limits

A wagering limit may restrict how much money can be staked during a defined period.

This can be useful because the amount wagered over a gambling session can be considerably greater than the amount initially deposited.

◷

Session or Time Limits

Some operators provide controls that limit the length of gambling sessions or the amount of time an account can be used during a particular period.

Time controls can be useful if you find yourself playing for longer than you originally intended.

⚠

Reality Checks

Reality checks are notifications that appear during a gambling session.

Depending on the operator, they may show information such as:

How long you have been playing
How much you have wagered
Your current balance
Your wins or losses

Their purpose is to interrupt continuous play and give you an opportunity to reconsider whether you want to continue.

⏸

Cooling-Off or Time-Out Periods

A time-out allows you to temporarily restrict access to gambling.

Depending on the operator and jurisdiction, this might be available for a defined number of hours, days, weeks, or months.

A cooling-off period can be useful when you feel that you need distance from gambling but are not necessarily seeking permanent account closure.

A stronger barrier

Self-Exclusion

Self-exclusion is a stronger measure designed for people who want to stop gambling for an extended period.

Depending on the casino and jurisdiction, self-exclusion may prevent you from accessing your account or using gambling services for a specified period.

Some jurisdictions also operate broader self-exclusion programs that can cover multiple licensed gambling operators.

If you decide that gambling is no longer something you can comfortably control, self-exclusion can provide an important additional barrier.

Do not attempt to bypass self-exclusion by creating new accounts or moving immediately to another casino.

If you are considering self-exclusion, check which options are available in your jurisdiction and whether a national or multi-operator exclusion program is available.

What to watch for

Warning Signs to Pay Attention To

Gambling problems do not always begin with dramatic financial losses.

Changes in behavior can develop gradually.

Consider your gambling habits carefully if you notice that you are:

Spending more money than you planned
Gambling for longer than intended
Frequently increasing your deposits
Increasing stakes to recover losses
Returning immediately after losing
Borrowing money to gamble
Using money intended for bills or necessities
Hiding gambling activity or losses from other people
Feeling anxious or distressed about gambling
Thinking about gambling for much of the day
Finding it difficult to stop once you start
Becoming frustrated when you cannot gamble
Neglecting work, study, relationships, sleep, or other responsibilities
Opening additional casino accounts after setting restrictions elsewhere
Trying to bypass limits or self-exclusion
Viewing gambling as a solution to financial problems

You do not need to experience every warning sign before taking action.

If gambling is becoming difficult to control, taking a break or using stronger account restrictions can be appropriate before the situation becomes more serious.

A bonus is not free money

Be Careful With Bonuses

Bonuses can make gambling offers look more valuable than they actually are.

A bonus is not free money.

Casino promotions can include conditions such as:

Wagering requirements
Minimum deposits
Maximum bets
Eligible-game restrictions
Game contribution percentages
Time limits
Maximum winnings
Payment-method exclusions
Withdrawal restrictions
Country restrictions

Never deposit more money than you intended simply to qualify for a larger bonus.

Before accepting an offer, read its current terms and decide whether you understand and are comfortable with the conditions.

My casino reviews examine bonus conditions as part of the wider review process, but you should still check the current terms directly before claiming an offer because promotions can change.

How the maths works

Understand That Games Are Designed Around Probability

Casino games involve chance.

Individual results can vary significantly over short periods, but past outcomes do not guarantee what will happen next.

For example, losing repeatedly does not mean that the next spin or hand must produce a win.

Likewise, a winning streak does not mean that future wins are guaranteed.

Concepts such as RTP and house edge describe mathematical characteristics over large numbers of plays. They do not predict what will happen during your individual session.

Never increase your stake because you believe a particular game “owes” you a win.

Know your net result

Keep Track of What You Actually Spend

It can be easy to underestimate gambling expenditure when money moves through several deposits or sessions.

Periodically review:

Deposits
Withdrawals
Gambling transactions
Bank or payment statements
Time spent gambling

Look at your net financial result, not only individual wins.

Winning €500 after previously losing €800 does not mean you are €500 ahead.

Keeping an accurate view of total spending can help prevent individual wins from creating a misleading impression of overall results.

Never a financial plan

Don’t Treat Gambling as Income

Gambling should never be used as a financial plan.

Do not rely on gambling to:

Pay bills
Repay debt
Build savings
Replace employment income
Fund essential expenses
Recover previous financial losses

Even games with relatively high published return-to-player percentages retain an element of uncertainty, and individual outcomes can vary significantly.

There is no responsible way to guarantee consistent casino profits.

Account safety

Protect Your Account

Responsible gambling also includes keeping your gambling account secure.

Use a strong, unique password and do not share account credentials with other people.

Where available, enable additional account-security measures.

Do not allow another person to gamble through your account, and do not use another person’s identity, payment method, or gambling account.

If you believe your account has been accessed without permission, contact the casino immediately.

Adults only

Gambling and Minors

Online gambling is intended only for adults who meet the minimum legal gambling age in their jurisdiction.

Never allow a child or underage person to access your casino account.

If you share devices with children or teenagers, consider:

Keeping gambling accounts logged out
Protecting devices with passwords
Not saving casino passwords in shared browsers
Using appropriate parental controls or blocking software
Keeping payment information secure

The applicable minimum age varies by jurisdiction and gambling product.

Always follow the law where you live.

Check your jurisdiction

Gambling Laws Differ by Country

Online gambling rules are not the same everywhere.

A casino being available online does not automatically mean that you are legally permitted to use it from your location.

Licensing, player eligibility, minimum age, taxation, payment availability, responsible gambling protections, and legal restrictions can differ substantially between jurisdictions.

Before creating an account, check the rules that apply where you live.

Casino availability can also change, so information contained in a review should not be treated as permanent confirmation that a particular operator accepts players from your country.

Concrete steps

If You Want to Stop Gambling

If gambling no longer feels like entertainment or you are finding it difficult to stay within your limits, consider taking concrete action rather than relying only on willpower.

Depending on your circumstances, this may include:

Stop depositing and gambling.
Withdraw remaining funds where permitted.
Set the strongest available account limits.
Use a cooling-off period.
Request self-exclusion.
Check whether your jurisdiction operates a multi-operator or national self-exclusion system.
Consider gambling-blocking tools for your devices.
Ask your bank or payment provider whether gambling-payment controls are available.
Seek independent gambling-support services available in your country.

The appropriate combination will depend on where you live and how much control you want to place between yourself and gambling.

Where to find help

Independent Gambling Support

If gambling is causing financial, emotional, relationship, or other difficulties, independent organizations can provide information and support.

Depending on your location, resources may include organizations such as GamCare, Gambling Therapy, Gamblers Anonymous, and other recognized local gambling-support services.

Because services and eligibility differ by country, use organizations appropriate to your jurisdiction.

If there is an immediate risk to your safety or someone else’s safety, contact the emergency services available where you are.

In the review process

How Responsible Gambling Affects My Casino Reviews

Responsible gambling is one of the areas I consider when researching casinos.

I look for information about the controls and policies available to players, which may include:

Deposit limits
Loss or wagering limits
Session controls
Reality checks
Cooling-off
Self-exclusion
Account closure
Gambling history
Responsible gambling information
Links to independent support

The exact tools available can depend on the casino and jurisdiction.

I do not assume that displaying a responsible gambling logo automatically means that a casino provides strong player-protection controls.

Where possible, I look at the actual tools and information available.

You can read more about how casinos are researched on the Review Methodology page.

My position

My Approach to Responsible Casino Content

David Thompson

Independent Casino Reviewer & Author

I’m David Thompson, the independent reviewer and author behind this website.

My job is to provide information about casinos—not to encourage you to gamble beyond your limits.

That means my reviews should explain important restrictions as well as benefits, examine the conditions behind bonuses, discuss payment and withdrawal rules, and make gambling risks clear.

Affiliate commissions help support this website, but they do not change one fundamental principle:

Your decision not to gamble is always a valid decision.

If you choose to gamble, set limits before you begin, understand the conditions, and only use money you can afford to lose.

If gambling stops being entertainment, stop and use the responsible gambling and support tools available to you.
