How I Review Casinos
I’m David Thompson, the independent casino reviewer and author behind this website.
When I review an online casino, my goal is not to repeat its marketing claims or simply compare the size of its welcome bonus. I want to understand the conditions behind those claims and identify the information a player should reasonably know before registering, depositing money, or accepting an offer.
That requires looking beyond the homepage.
My research can include the casino’s terms and conditions, bonus rules, payment policies, account and verification requirements, responsible gambling information, licensing details, game selection, customer support, and other information relevant to the player experience.
This page explains how I research casinos, which sources I prioritize, what I mean when I describe something as “verified” or “tested,” how affiliate relationships are handled, and how reviews are updated.
My Review Principles
Every casino review is guided by five principles.
1. Accuracy
Important factual claims should be based on information that can be reasonably verified.
Where possible, I prioritize primary sources such as the casino’s own terms, payment documentation, bonus rules, account policies, and relevant regulatory information.
2. Independence
An affiliate relationship does not automatically make a casino good, safe, suitable, or worthy of recommendation.
Commercial relationships help fund this website, but they do not remove the responsibility to identify restrictions, disadvantages, or concerns.
3. Transparency
I want readers to understand both what I know and how I know it.
When something has been researched from documentation, I treat it as researched or verified information.
When something has actually been tested through an account or real player journey, I may describe it as tested.
I do not intentionally present desk research as personal experience.
4. Relevance
I prioritize information that can materially affect a player’s decision.
A casino review does not become more useful simply because it is longer. I focus on details such as withdrawal rules, bonus restrictions, verification requirements, payment limitations, ownership, licensing, availability, and other conditions that could affect the player.
5. Responsibility
Gambling involves financial risk.
My reviews do not present gambling as a source of income, investment, or reliable way to make money. A positive review does not mean that a player will win.
My Research Process
I use a structured process when researching a casino.
The exact depth of testing can vary depending on the casino, jurisdiction, account availability, payment access, and other practical limitations.
However, the research framework remains consistent.
Step 1 — Identify the Casino and Operator
I begin by establishing exactly what I am reviewing.
This can include checking:
- Casino brand name
- Website/domain
- Operating company
- Relevant corporate information
- Stated licence or licences
- Applicable terms and conditions
- Restricted jurisdictions
- Minimum-age requirements
- Other brands operated by the same company where relevant
This step is important because a casino brand and the legal company operating it are not necessarily the same entity.
Where possible, I distinguish between the casino’s marketing brand and its underlying operator.
Step 2 — Licensing and Regulatory Checks
A licence claim should not be accepted solely because a casino displays a licence logo or regulatory reference.
Where reasonably possible, I compare licensing information presented by the casino with information available from the relevant regulator or other appropriate primary source.
Depending on the jurisdiction, I may check:
- Name of the licence holder
- Licence or registration number
- Regulator
- Status of the licence where publicly available
- Whether the reviewed domain appears to correspond with the licence
- Jurisdictions covered by the licence
- Restrictions relevant to players
- Responsible gambling requirements associated with the licence
If licensing information cannot be independently confirmed, I avoid presenting it as independently verified.
Licensing is an important part of a casino assessment, but a licence alone does not determine the complete quality of a casino.
Step 3 — Terms and Conditions Review
The terms and conditions are one of the most important sources in my research.
Promotional pages are designed to highlight benefits. Terms and conditions often contain the restrictions that determine how those benefits actually work.
I therefore look for conditions that can materially affect players.
These may include:
- Account eligibility
- Age requirements
- Country restrictions
- Multiple-account rules
- Identity verification
- Deposit requirements
- Withdrawal conditions
- Withdrawal limits
- Dormant-account rules
- Account closure conditions
- Bonus restrictions
- Maximum-bet rules
- Prohibited betting patterns
- Game restrictions
- Payment restrictions
- Currency conditions
- Document requirements
- Promotional exclusions
- Rules concerning account balances
Where an important restriction exists, I aim to explain it in practical language rather than simply reproduce legal text.
Step 4 — Bonus Evaluation
I do not evaluate a casino bonus based only on the advertised amount.
A large headline number can be misleading if the underlying conditions make the offer difficult or impractical to use.
When reviewing a bonus, I may examine:
- Bonus amount
- Bonus percentage
- Minimum qualifying deposit
- Wagering requirements
- Whether wagering applies to the bonus, deposit, or both
- Maximum qualifying deposit
- Maximum bonus amount
- Maximum bet while wagering
- Eligible games
- Excluded games
- Game contribution percentages
- Time limits
- Payment-method exclusions
- Country restrictions
- Maximum winnings where applicable
- Free-spin conditions
- Free-spin wagering requirements
- Withdrawal restrictions
- Other material promotional conditions
I try to distinguish between advertised bonus value and practical bonus value.
For example, two casinos can advertise similarly sized bonuses while having substantially different wagering requirements, maximum bets, eligible games, or withdrawal restrictions.
Those differences matter more to me than the headline number alone.
Step 5 — Deposits and Payment Methods
I research how players can fund their accounts and the conditions attached to those payment methods.
Depending on available information, I may check:
- Supported payment methods
- Minimum deposit
- Maximum deposit
- Supported currencies
- Processing information
- Potential casino-side fees
- Country-specific payment availability
- Whether particular payment methods qualify for bonuses
- Cryptocurrency availability where applicable
- Payment restrictions disclosed in the terms
Payment availability can vary by country, currency, account, and payment provider.
For this reason, I avoid assuming that every payment method advertised by a casino will necessarily be available to every reader.
Step 6 — Withdrawal Review
Withdrawals receive particular attention because they can reveal conditions that are less important during registration but highly important once a player wants to access their money.
Where information is available, I investigate:
- Minimum withdrawal
- Maximum withdrawal
- Daily withdrawal limits
- Weekly withdrawal limits
- Monthly withdrawal limits
- Processing periods
- Pending periods
- Verification requirements
- Withdrawal methods
- Payment-method restrictions
- Casino-side withdrawal fees
- Currency restrictions
- Conditions relating to deposited funds
- Bonus-related withdrawal conditions
- Other restrictions affecting access to funds
Where I have personally completed a withdrawal test, I may report what happened during that test.
I do not present a published processing estimate as though I personally experienced it.
Step 7 — KYC and Account Verification
Identity verification is a normal part of many regulated gambling environments, but the process and requirements can vary considerably.
I research available information concerning:
- When verification may be requested
- Identity documents
- Proof-of-address requirements
- Payment verification
- Source-of-funds checks where applicable
- Additional verification conditions
- Account restrictions while verification is pending
- Withdrawal-related verification requirements
If I personally complete a KYC process, I may describe that experience separately from the casino’s published requirements.
A single personal test should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every player will receive the same verification process or processing time.
Step 8 — Games and Software Providers
A large game count does not automatically mean a better casino.
I look at the composition and usability of the game library rather than relying only on the advertised number of games.
Depending on the casino, I may examine:
- Slots
- Table games
- Live casino
- Blackjack
- Roulette
- Baccarat
- Poker-style games
- Game shows
- Crash or instant-win games
- Jackpot games
- Software providers
- Search and filtering
- Mobile availability
- Demo availability where applicable
- Geographic restrictions
- Bonus contribution restrictions
Game availability can change and may differ between countries.
Therefore, game counts should generally be treated as time-sensitive rather than permanent facts.
Step 9 — Website and Mobile Experience
A casino needs to be usable as well as feature-rich.
Where appropriate, I examine practical aspects of the website such as:
- Navigation
- Registration flow
- Game discovery
- Search
- Category organization
- Account management
- Deposit interface
- Withdrawal interface
- Mobile browser experience
- App availability where applicable
- General clarity of important information
When a particular device or platform has actually been tested, that may be stated in the review.
I avoid claiming that a casino was tested across devices or operating systems that were not actually used.
Step 10 — Customer Support
Customer support can become particularly important when a player has a payment, verification, bonus, or account issue.
I research the support channels offered by the casino, which may include:
- Live chat
- Contact forms
- Help centres
- FAQ resources
- Telephone support where available
- Supported languages
- Published support hours
When customer support is personally tested, I may additionally consider:
- Ease of reaching an agent
- Response time
- Whether the response addressed the actual question
- Clarity of the answer
- Whether additional escalation was required
A single support interaction represents one experience at a particular time and should not be interpreted as a guarantee of identical response times for every player.
Step 11 — Responsible Gambling
Responsible gambling is part of the review process rather than an afterthought.
Depending on the casino and jurisdiction, I look for tools such as:
- Deposit limits
- Loss limits
- Wagering limits
- Session or time limits
- Reality checks
- Cooling-off periods
- Temporary account restrictions
- Self-exclusion
- Account closure
- Access to gambling history
- Responsible gambling information
- Links to relevant support organizations
Availability can vary by operator and jurisdiction.
A casino having responsible gambling tools does not remove the financial risks associated with gambling.
More information is available on the Responsible Gambling page.
Step 12 — Geographic Availability
Casino availability is not universal.
A casino that accepts players from one country may prohibit players from another. Bonus availability, payment methods, game providers, currencies, and regulatory protections can also vary geographically.
Where relevant, I check:
- Restricted countries
- Accepted markets
- Minimum age
- Currency availability
- Payment availability
- Bonus eligibility
- Licensing implications
- Country-specific terms
Readers should always confirm their eligibility before registering.
Not all sources are equalMy Source Hierarchy
Not all sources have equal evidentiary value.
When researching factual claims, I generally prioritize sources in approximately the following order.
Level 1 — Primary Regulatory and Legal Sources
Where relevant and accessible:
- Gambling regulators
- Public licensing registers
- Applicable legislation or regulatory guidance
- Other authoritative government or regulatory resources
These sources are particularly important for licensing and regulatory claims.
Level 2 — Primary Casino Sources
These include:
- Casino terms and conditions
- Bonus terms
- Payment policies
- Privacy policies
- Responsible gambling policies
- Account documentation
- Help centres
- Operator information
- Casino website information
These are usually the primary source for the casino’s current commercial conditions.
Level 3 — Direct Testing
When practical and actually performed, direct interaction can provide additional evidence about how the casino works in practice.
This may include:
- Registration
- Account interface
- Customer support
- Deposit
- KYC
- Gameplay
- Withdrawal
Direct testing is clearly distinguished from information obtained through documentation.
Level 4 — Reputable Independent Sources
Independent publications, industry databases, or other credible sources may be used to provide context, identify discrepancies, or investigate information that requires additional verification.
I do not intentionally copy another review site’s assessment and present it as my own experience.
What “Researched,” “Verified,” and “Tested” Mean
I use these terms carefully because they represent different levels of evidence.
Researched
I examined available information concerning the subject using relevant sources.
This does not necessarily mean the claim was independently confirmed or personally tested.
Verified
I checked a factual claim against an appropriate reliable source available at the time of review.
For example, a wagering requirement may be verified against current bonus terms.
Tested
I personally interacted with the relevant feature or process.
If a review says that a deposit, withdrawal, registration process, support interaction, or other feature was tested, that activity was actually performed.
Observed
Something was visible during my examination of the casino, website, account, or documentation at a particular point in time.
Advertised / Stated by the Casino
The casino makes the claim, but I have not necessarily independently verified or tested it.
This distinction is particularly important for claims concerning processing speeds, game counts, payment availability, or promotional benefits.
How I Handle Conflicting Information
Casino information does not always match across every page.
A promotional page may state one condition while the terms contain another. A payment page may contain information that differs from an FAQ. Third-party sources may also report outdated details.
When I identify a material discrepancy, I try to determine which source is:
- More authoritative;
- More specific;
- More recent; and
- More directly applicable to the issue.
Current contractual terms generally carry greater weight than promotional wording when evaluating the conditions attached to an offer.
Where a meaningful conflict cannot be resolved confidently, I prefer to disclose the uncertainty rather than invent a definitive answer.
How I Evaluate Advantages and Disadvantages
A review should contain judgment, not just data.
However, that judgment should be connected to evidence.
A feature may be considered an advantage when it provides meaningful value to players—for example, flexible payment availability, transparent terms, useful responsible gambling controls, or a broad game selection.
Likewise, disadvantages may include factors such as:
- Restrictive wagering requirements
- Low withdrawal limits
- Significant geographic restrictions
- Limited payment availability
- Complex verification requirements
- Important bonus exclusions
- Missing responsible gambling functionality
- Conditions that materially reduce the usefulness of an advertised feature
I do not intentionally create artificial negatives simply to make a review appear balanced.
The advantages and disadvantages should reflect what the research actually reveals.
Commercial disclosureHow Affiliate Relationships Affect Reviews
Some casinos covered on this website have affiliate relationships with us.
If you follow an affiliate link and register or play, we may receive a commission from the casino operator or a tracking partner, normally at no additional cost to you.
This is how the website can generate revenue.
However, affiliate compensation does not change the underlying factual criteria I use when reviewing casinos.
A commercial relationship does not mean that:
- A casino automatically receives a positive review;
- Important restrictions should be hidden;
- Bonus conditions should be presented more favourably than they are;
- A casino operator can rewrite my editorial conclusions; or
- A casino without an affiliate relationship should automatically receive a worse assessment.
Where commercial relationships exist, I believe readers should be able to understand them.
You can find additional information in our Affiliate Disclosure.
Publication is the startReview Updates and Freshness
Casino reviews can become outdated.
I therefore treat publication as the beginning of the maintenance process rather than the end.
Information particularly likely to change includes:
- Bonuses
- Wagering requirements
- Payment methods
- Withdrawal limits
- Processing information
- Games
- Software providers
- Operator information
- Licensing
- Restricted countries
- Responsible gambling tools
- Terms and conditions
Reviews may be revisited when material changes are identified.
A page may display a Last Verified or Last Reviewed date when a genuine review of its important information has taken place.
I do not intentionally change dates simply to make old content appear new.
Corrections Policy
Accuracy matters, but casino information can change between reviews.
If I discover that material information is incorrect or outdated, I aim to investigate it and update the review.
Readers, casino operators, and other parties can also contact us about potential factual errors.
A correction request does not guarantee that content will be changed. I first check the disputed information against appropriate sources.
Where the evidence shows that the page is incorrect, it should be corrected.
Where a casino operator disagrees with an editorial opinion rather than a factual statement, I may maintain the original assessment if I believe it remains supported by the evidence.
The limits of a reviewWhat My Reviews Cannot Guarantee
There are limits to every casino review.
A review represents the information and experience available at the time it was researched.
It cannot guarantee:
- That every player will have the same experience;
- That a withdrawal will take the same amount of time;
- That the same payment methods will be available in every country;
- That a bonus will remain unchanged;
- That every game will remain available;
- That KYC requirements will be identical for every account;
- That a casino’s terms will not change;
- That a player will win;
- That gambling will be profitable.
Before depositing money or accepting a promotion, players should check the current terms that apply to their own account and jurisdiction.
Out of scope, on purposeWhat I Don’t Do
Transparency also means explaining what isn’t part of the methodology.
I do not:
- Treat casino marketing claims as independent evidence;
- Present research as hands-on testing;
- Claim that I made a withdrawal when I did not;
- Guarantee winnings or profitability;
- Assume a casino is suitable for everyone;
- Ignore significant restrictions because a casino is an affiliate partner;
- Intentionally copy another reviewer’s personal experience and present it as my own;
- Change a review date merely to make a page appear fresh;
- Consider a large advertised bonus automatically better than a smaller one.
My objective is not to make every casino look attractive.
It is to understand what the casino offers, identify the conditions attached to it, and give readers enough information to make their own decision.
Your own checklistBefore You Choose a Casino
Even a detailed review should not replace checking the conditions that apply directly to you.
Before registering or depositing, I recommend checking at least:
- Who operates the casino and what licensing information applies.
- Whether players from your country are accepted.
- The current bonus terms—not just the headline amount.
- The payment and withdrawal methods available to your account.
- Withdrawal limits and verification requirements.
- Responsible gambling controls available to you.
- The current terms and conditions before depositing money.
And most importantly, remember that gambling always involves the possibility of losing money.
